Painted Rock Petroglyph Campground sits on public lands managed by the BLM in the Sonoran Desert roughly 90 miles southwest of Phoenix, about a dozen miles west of Gila Bend off Interstate 8. The campground sits beneath broad desert skies with Oatman Mountain to the northwest and the Painted Rock Mountains on the eastern horizon, framing wide views and strong opportunities for solitude and night-sky watching. The day-use area adjoins the campground and protects an archaeological site with hundreds of petroglyphs images carved centuries ago by Indigenous peoples and later historic inscriptions displayed along a short interpretive trail; the panels note that the glyphs generally face east-southeast, the direction travelers would have approached from. That same landscape carries deeper layers of history: segments of the Juan Bautista de Anza route, passages of the Mormon Battalion, and portions of the Butterfield Overland Stage Route all run nearby. Expect classic Sonoran Desert vegetation saguaro and cholla, barrel cactus, creosote, palo verde and ironwood and wildlife such as mule deer, kit fox, Gambel's quail, chuckwalla and desert iguana; the BLM asks visitors to treat the petroglyphs and surrounding lands with respect because of their cultural significance. The campground provides 62 sites that accommodate both tents and RVs, grouped into Hohokam Loop (25 sites), Patayan Loop (35 sites) and two sites along the main access road. There are no water or electrical hookups; each site has a picnic table and a steel fire ring, and the facility maintains two vault toilets and trash collection. Day-use picnic areas nearby offer shade and grills. From October 1 through March 31 you must reserve and pay for sites through Recreation.gov; the nightly fee is $8.00 per vehicle and Recreation.gov is the only accepted payment method cash and checks are no longer accepted. The approach includes roughly 11 miles of paved road and a half-mile dirt road; roads inside the campground are hardened dirt and gravel and are generally passable for large Class A motorhomes and fifth-wheel trailers when conditions are dry, but the area is prone to flash flooding during monsoon season so check weather and road conditions before you go. For facility-specific questions call (602) 867-5400; nearby opportunities for more remote hiking and wildlife viewing exist in the adjacent Woolsey Peak and Signal Mountain wilderness areas.
