Top Spring Blossom Destinations

Nothing says spring like a field full of freshly-bloomed wildflowers.  If your heart sings when you see meadows full of orange, yellow, red, and blue flowers, then you’ll want to hit all the spring blossom sites on our list.  Don’t miss the chance to see delicate desert blooms at their best or to wander through a field of lupine, wild lilies, and showy asters.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage
Visit the Smokies in late April and join in the wildflower festivities!  At this time of year, the woods burst with trilliums, lady slipper orchids, showy orchids, crested dwarf iris, fire pink, columbine, bleeding heart, phacelia, jack-in-the-pulpit, little brown jugs, and violets.

Big Cypress National Preserve, Florida
Beginning in February and March, the wildflowers of Florida burst into action.  Visit the cypress swamps and freshwater bogs and marshes to see blooms like pitcher plants, water hyacinths, and gorgeous, showy bromeliads.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California
In years with wet winters, the desert flowers of this state park explode in beauty.  Visit in March and April to see flowering cactus, indigo bush, California fuchsia, desert lavender, fireweed, monkey flower, penstemons, desert mallow, pincushion, phacelia and more. Look for desert asters in the washes and desert lilies in the badlands.

Bluebonnet Festival, Chappell Hill, Texas
You’ll see Indian Paintbrush, Black-eyed Susans, and the world-famous Texas Bluebonnets at this fun and lively festival.  Texas Hill Country is awash with beauty in the spring, particularly in March, April and May (the bluebonnets reach their peak in April).

The Oregon Coast
During the month of May, fields and meadows bloom with color all along the Oregon Coast.  Head to Eugene for a grand display of wild rhododendrons and azaleas or visit the Darlingtonia Botanical Wayside for cobra lilies, monkey flowers, sand verbena, and morning glory.  At the Columbia River Gorge, April is the time to see shooting stars, lupine, larkspur, paintbrush, forget-me-nots, and wild ginger.

Joshua Tree National Park, California
Fragile desert flowers add a touch of beauty to the desert landscape in March, April and May.  Head to Indian Cove at the north end of the park to take the wildflower walk and look for desert mallow, ocotillo, and prickly pear cacti.  If you visit in March, you’ll see the Joshua Trees explode with white blossoms.

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona
After a wet winter, you’ll find fields of poppies, lupines, and owl clover in this desert ecosystem.  Visit in March or April to see ocotillo, paloverde, and the blooms of the organ pipe, saguaro and other cacti.

The Superstition Wilderness, Arizona
This region to the east of Phoenix comes to life in March and April, when the rains of winter nourish thousands of flowering plants.  You’ll see hundreds of delicate desert flowers in the washes, dry stream beds, and shaded canyons.

Chimney Rock at Point Reyes, California
The dramatic coastline at Point Reyes is known for its whale watching and water sports, but it’s also a great place to see wildflowers.  In March and early April, you’ll find lupine, wild iris, mariposa lilies, California poppies, owl's clover, tidy-tips, mission bells, and goldfields.

Marin Headlands, California
If you’re in the Bay Area in March and April, be sure to hike through the Tennessee Valley, a two-mile-long valley that’s bordered by fragrant eucalyptus trees. Look for California poppies, purple lupine, and Douglas irises.
