One of the most exciting events to attend at any time during a trip to New York City is a Broadway show.  Throughout the year there are a variety of shows, some long running and some only running for a few weeks. Here are a few of the best and most popular shows on Broadway, in May 2011.


The Addams Family
This show is about the fun and spooky Addams Family. The show tells the story of the families adventures when Wednesday, the daughter, falls in love. The story and music is all original, but it does not disappoint fans of the original Addams Family. This show can be seen at the Lunt Fontanne Theater on West 46th Street.

Anything Goes
This show is definitely classical musical theater. Anything Goes is set on the ocean liner S.S. American crossing from New York to England, and it tells the tale of a singer, and others as they try to help a friend win the heart of his love. Viewers of this show will hear fun songs, see tap numbers, and much more. Anything goes can be seen at Stephen Sondheim Theatre on West 43rd Street.

Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo
This play is based in Baghdad during the Iraq war. The story starts with two Americans guarding a tiger in the Baghdad Zoo. From there the show tells the story of different people and their intertwining lives. This show tells a dark tale of war and the people affected by it. Visitors can see this show at the Richard Rodgers Theater on West 46th Street.

Billy Elliot
This show is based on the film Billy Elliot. It tells the story of a boy with a gift for ballet in 1980s Northern England. The show tells a tale of how Billy Elliot discovers his gift and fights to continue, all during the difficult times of the miner's strike in 1984. Visitors to New York can see this show at the Imperial Theater on West 45th Street.

Catch Me If You Can
Catch Me If You Can tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr., a boy with a gift for forging checks and reinventing himself, and the FBI agent Carl Hanratty that pursues him around the world. Visitors can catch this performance at the Neil Simon Theater on West 52nd Street.

How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying
How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying is the story of a young man and his progression up the corporate ladder. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, this show is sure to delight with its fun song and dance. Visitors to New York can watch this excellent show at the Al Hirschfeld Theater on West 45th Street.

Jersey Boys
Jersey Boys tells the tale of the Four Seasons. The story includes tales of their development as a group, their relationships and how they became the hit group. This musical has great storytelling and an excellent score. Jersey Boys can be seen at the August Wilson Theater on West 52nd Street.

Memphis
This fantastic musical is set in Memphis, Tennessee during the 1950s. It is the story of a white DJ with a passion for R&B and a black singer. The musical tells the story of their relationship and the difficulties they experience in fighting for their relationship. Visitors to New York can see this award winning show at the Shubert Theatre on West 44th Street.

The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running show on Broadway. It is the classic story of the deformed composer haunting the Paris Opera House and the young soprano that he tutors. The Phantom of the Opera combines beautiful music from composer Andrew Lloyd Weber, with a show filled with romance and horror. This show is based one the novel by Gaston Leroux and has been a hit since it arrived at Broadway. The show can be seen at the Majestic Theater on West 44th Street.

Wicked

This musical is the fun and engaging story of the characters from The Wizard of Oz before Dorothy. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, before she became the Wicked Witch of the West, from her side. The story combines all of the elements of love, trust and betrayal. Visitors to New York will love listening to the music, enjoying the costumes and sets, and will fall in love with the characters of the award winning show at the Gershwin Theater on West 51st Street.
