Top Haunted Cities in the United States
The United States is filled with cities with haunted destinations. Travelers will find historic prisons, mental institutions, battlefields and much more. These destinations are excellent ideas for travelers that enjoy unusual, sometimes frightening, but always interesting destinations.
Charleston is a city with plenty of history from the Civil War time period. This bloody conflict left it's mark throughout the country. Here in Charleston travelers can visit Boone Hall Plantation, which is said to be haunted by a Civil War soldier. Fort Sumpter is another destination that visitors can go to learn about the history of the region as well as see some of those that have remained beyond their death.
This city is famous for it's history of gangsters, especially Al Capone. Visitors can learn about this history and about the victims of this time period. Those travelers interested in paranormal activity should be sure to spend some time near the Clark Street Bridge, where it is said that screams are still heard.
Visitors should make Gettysburg National Military Park a first top on any trip to Gettysburg. This city has a long and interesting city. One of the most haunted destinations are the three cemeteries with the name of St. Louis. St. Louis #1 is the oldest cemetery in the city. It was opened in 1789 and is filled with above ground vaults. Visitors can take tours of the cemetery to see the vaults and learn about the history. St. Louis #1 is home to the burial place of Maria Laveau, the voodoo queen.
The city of Salem, Massachusetts has a notorious past, and now has a reputation for being a very haunted destination. Each year the city has a great Halloween celebration. The main haunted feature of San Francisco is Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz Island has been many things in its long history, it was a military reservation, it was occupied by American Indians for 18 months in 1964 and 1969. Most famously it was a penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. Today it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Visitors to the Bay Area can take a variety of tours to the Island. The site is said to be haunted. Visitors can take day tours, or choose an evening tour. On these tours visitors have the chance to learn about the history of the island and tour the former penitentiary.
This beautiful southern city is filled with charm and beauty as well as a healthy amount of paranormal activity. Visitors can explore the Mercer House home of Jim Williams, which is said to be haunted by the alleged murder victim of Jim Williams. Bonaventure Cemetery is another haunted destination. The city is also home to Fort Pulaski, a Civil War fort, which is also said to be haunted.
St. Augustine, FL
St. Augustine is the oldest established European city in the US. t. Augustine also is home to the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort built to protect the city from pirates. The Castillo de San Marcos was heavily fortified and surrounded by a moat, and today visitors can watch the historic weapon demos, including canons, on the weekends. This destination is also said to be haunted by the soldiers of the Castillo de San Marcos and others.
